Adding a Cookie Policy to Your Website

Adding a Cookie Policy to Your Website

In today's digital environment, data privacy is a top concern for both businesses and users. One of the most important elements of maintaining transparency and adhering to privacy regulations is implementing a cookie policy on your website. A cookie policy informs users about the types of cookies being used on your site, why they are necessary, and how the information is processed.

With the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other privacy laws such as the ePrivacy Directive, website owners must disclose how user data is being collected, stored, and managed. Cookies, which track user behavior and preferences, fall under this category of data collection. A clearly visible and accessible cookie policy on your website ensures you stay compliant with regulations, avoid potential fines, and establish trust with your users.

We recommend utilizing Cookie Control from Cookie Bot or Cookie Yes, both which are industry-standard tool for managing and implementing cookie policies. These solutions simplifies compliance with cookie legislation, making it easy for users to control which cookies they accept.

When registering for an account, we recommend using a generic email address (such as compliance@yourcompany.com) instead of a personal one. This ensures that future access to the account won’t be tied to one individual, allowing different team members to manage the account as needed, which is especially important for long-term operational continuity.

Recommendations for Multi-Site Setups (e.g., English and Welsh Sites)

If your company operates more than one domain—such as English and Welsh versions of your site—you will need to take additional steps to ensure compliance across both domains.

Step 1: Visit the Pricing Page

Head to the Cookie Control pricing page such as Cookie Bot Pricing Page or Cookie Yes pricing plan..

Step 2: Choose Your Plan

Browse through the available plans and select the one that best suits your needs:

  • For single-site setups, we typically recommend the Free plan.
  • For multi-site businesses or companies operating in different languages (e.g., English and Welsh sites), consider the Premium plans for easier management.

Click "Buy Now" under your selected plan.

Step 3: Register an Account

You’ll be prompted to register for a Cookie Bot account. Ensure that you use a generic email address (e.g., compliance@yourcompany.com) to future-proof account access for your team.

For multi-site users registering multiple Community plans, use different email addresses for each site, as each policy can only be linked to one email per domain.

Step 4: Send Us Your Login Details

After registering for your account, simply send us your login credentials. We’ll take care of configuring the cookie consent preferences for your website.

Our team will handle:

  • Customizing the cookie categories (e.g., essential, performance, marketing).
  • Designing the banner layout to match your website’s branding.
  • Setting up the appropriate consent types (opt-in/opt-out for different cookie categories).

Step 5: We Generate Your Script

Once we’ve configured your cookie consent settings, we’ll generate the necessary script for your website. This script ensures that the cookie banner is displayed correctly to users and tracks their consent preferences.

Step 6: We Add the Script to Your Website

We will handle the integration of the generated script into your website. Depending on your platform (e.g., WordPress, Umbraco, custom, our team will ensure the script is correctly placed in your site’s header, making sure everything is functional.

Step 7: Testing and Publishing

Once the script is added, we’ll test the cookie consent banner to make sure it works seamlessly. This includes:

  • Ensuring the banner displays properly on your site.
  • Verifying that users can give and withdraw consent easily.
  • Checking that cookies are blocked or allowed based on user choices.

After confirming everything works as expected, we will publish the updates to your live site. You won’t need to worry about any technical details—we’ll take care of it all!

Step 8: Monitor and Manage

Now that your cookie banner is live, it’s important for you to periodically monitor compliance and make updates if privacy regulations change. Most cookie policies provides a user dashboard where you can manage your settings, view consent statistics, and make any necessary adjustments.
